The Edammer cheese is from origin a nice round cheese of about 1,7 kilo. It is the most familiar cheese of the world.
The little round cheese that we know as Edammer, acknowledges his name of the Dutch town Edam. In the 14th century Edam was an important port.
In the surrounding area of Edam the farms made lots of round cheeses. This cheeses were taken to the cheesemarket in Edam. By far the most cheeses were sold from the Edam cheesemarket. That's how the Edammer got his famous name.
Before the cheese got his name Edammer, it was called a 'klootkaasje'. 'Kloot' means round.
